We are a local history group of volunteers and have recorded the inscriptions of ALL the monuments at Herne Bay cemetery. Our aim is to make our transcriptions freely available for public reference (Volume 1 is already available at the Herne Bay library, the Seaside Museum at Herne Bay, Herne Bay Historical Records Society, Herne & Broomfield Local History Group, Kent Archives at Maidstone and Canterbury Cathedral archives). Our project is ongoing, as new graves are added and old graves disappear and we will soon have Volume 2 available for public reference. We have given talks to local groups, staged an exhibition at the museum, published two illustrated books featuring over 40 biographies of people buried in the cemetery, hosted 3 Heritage Open Days and we conduct historical guided tours at the cemetery for small groups. Our records and archive enable us to help people locate graves, even those that are unmarked. At present, we don't undertake to maintain, or tend graves, but are in discussion with the council to support and guide volunteers who may wish to carry out these tasks.
